PCFGA Legislative Report – 2015-07-10

  • Recent News

    • 6/25 The legislative session in Albany ended a week late. For the first time since passage of the unSAFE Act, the Republican-controlled Senate had a real opportunity to push for repeal by tying it to the must-pass NYC rent control renewal. A bill A8215-2015 was introduced in the Assembly by Pete Lopez to do exactly that. Unfortunately, not ONE of the so-called “pro-gun” Republicans would sponsor the bill into the Senate, despite tremendous pressure from their constituents to do so. Each and every one of them voted FOR continuing to compromise away your rights, in the final “big ugly” rent control bill S6012-2015.

    • 7/6 & 6/15 Our neighbors in the City of Poughkeepsie continue to face an anti-gun “safe storage” ordinance. It is important that we continue to show up and express our displeasure whenever these anti-gun proposals are brought forward, because this anti-gun effort is now spreading all over NYS (Newburgh and Albany are the latest).

      • Thanks to the PCFGA members who attended on June 15. After the formal presentation by Jackie Emslie on behalf of Dutchess County SCOPE on June 15, Joe Rich, the anti-gun Councilman representing the City’s Second Ward came unglued, and began shouting at Poughkeepsie residents that they should SHUT UP. The video of this outburst went viral with over 166,000 views, and was picked up by local and national media, including the Poughkeepsie Journal, WPDH, The Blaze (Glenn Beck), and Fox News.

      • Thanks to the PCFGA members who attended on July 6 in opposition to the NYAGV presentation. The current rumor is that we have swung enough votes to potentially uphold a veto. Keep up the pressure!

    • 7/10 The Memorandum of Understanding released today between Flanagan and the Cuomo administration regarding an agreement that the failed ammunition database mandated by the unSAFE Act has failed, is only smoke and mirrors to provide cover for the Senate republicans while they accomplish nothing:

      • Second Amendment advocates like Republican Assemblyman Bill Nojay, meanwhile, reacted to the news by saying the MOU has little practical impact. “The MOU therefore has all the significance of the Governor and Mr. Flanagan announcing that tomorrow the sun will rise in the East,” Nojay said. “We all knew that, it was going to happen anyhow and taking credit for it is political grandstanding.” http://bit.ly/1NZHRdn

    • 5/5 All of our Putnam County Legislators voted Yes on a motion in support of our Second Amendment rights, with one exception: Barbara Scuccimarra, from Legislative District 1, abstained, citing that the resolution is “very confusing.” Please refer to the Legislative column in the June PCFGA newsletter for details including actions you can take.

    • 6/8 A bill S5837 passed in the Senate to reform portions of the unSAFE Act. It is unlikely to go anywhere in the Assembly because this is only being handled as political theater in the Senate. http://bit.ly/1B7VmpL

    • 6/15 Our neighbors in the City of Poughkeepsie continue to face an anti-gun “safe storage” ordinance. It is important that we continue to show up and express our displeasure whenever these anti-gun proposals are brought forward, because this anti-gun effort is now spreading all over NYS (Newburgh and Albany are the latest).

      • Jackie Emslie from Dutchess County Pistol Association writes:

        • Please muster the Second Amendment troops and have them attend the City of Poughkeepsie Common Council meeting on June 15, starting at 6:30pm.  Parking is free in the City Hall Complex, right across the street from the Poughkeepsie Journal building. Meeting is in the 3rd floor chambers.
Public Comment period is at the beginning, but those attending do not have to speak.
I am doing a presentation that will explain why the proposed ordinance for mandatory firearms storage is not in the best interest of the City or its residents. I need people there for support.
The anti-gun group New Yorkers Against Gun Violence will also be there giving a presentation. Undoubtedly they will be bringing their people as well. We need to be overwhelmingly in the majority.

    • Our neighbors in the City of Poughkeepsie are facing an anti-gun “safe storage” ordinance. Public comments were received by the Poughkeepsie Common Council on April 20. Thanks to the PCFGA members who showed up in opposition to this proposed ordinance. It is important that we continue to show up and express our displeasure whenever these anti-gun proposals are brought forward. Local ordinances will now be a focus for NYAGV and we must be vigilant and ready to push back. This new local focus was reported recently along with phony polling results, as part of their renewed efforts to trample our rights: http://bit.ly/1zkOc04

    • The NYS budget passed with unSAFE Act funding intact. All of the Republican State Senators voted YES on this budget. Some of them are claiming this funding was not present or that they were not aware that it was present in the budget. What we do know without question is that most of the budget bills were dropped onto the legislators’ desks at the last minute, and were voted on with a “message of necessity” from the Governor. The legislators need to vote NO on any bill that they have not read, and in fact some of them had already made such a pledge – and then violated that pledge when they voted for this budget.

      • Dini has a perfect record on the Second Amendment, voting YES on Resolution #246 of 2009 “opposing various proposed anti-gun owner legislation in New York State” and YES on Resolution #45 of 2013 “opposing the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of 2013”.

      • Please show your support for legislators like Dini who have shown their support for our rights. You don’t need to live in Dini’s district to attend; all are welcome. If you cannot attend, please send a donation.

    • Putnam County SCOPE participated in SCOPE Lobby Day on 3/3/15. SCOPE met with all Putnam County legislators including Assemblywoman Galef who voted FOR the unSAFE Act.

      • According to Galef’s legislative aide, since passage of the unSAFE Act, none of her constituents have come in to her office to voice their displeasure. Therefore, she is assuming that all of her constituents love the unSAFE Act.

      • ACTION ITEM: If you live in Galef’s district, make an appointment to see her in her district office, and voice your displeasure with the unSAFE Act. Be SPECIFIC about the parts of the law that are having a direct impact on you as an individual constituent. Ask for support on the three bipartisan bills listed below – A5628, A5629, and A5630.

      • ACTION ITEM: Attend both of Galef’s town halls tomorrow and show your support for your Second Amendment rights.

    • Three bills to repeal portions of the unSAFE Act are now in both houses, with the Assembly side sponsored by Anthony Brindisi (D-Utica). This bipartisan support shows that we are gaining traction. It is crucial that we keep up the pressure on the legislators to get rid of the unSAFE Act. If you live in a Democrat’s district (e.g. Galef) please ask for support these bills:
